Synopsis

Demand management makes it possible to adapt the consumption curve in relation to electricity production capacities. Dozens of interactive systems have been designed to persuade individuals to control the electricity consumption of their homes, mostly in the form of mobile devices or ambient physical installations encouraging energy sobriety [1]. In response, we proposed to explore the workplace context by designing tangible interfaces for public and collective places [2]. Rather than energy sobriety (i.e. consume less), we suggest energy cleanliness (i.e. consume better), by optimising the rate of renewable energy by shifting consumption through storage means [4]. Initially designed persuasive interfaces are being questioned, in particular because they seek to optimise existing behaviours rather than promote new social practices [9].

For example, we proposed to explore a new practice of disconnecting laptop batteries in the workplace and reconnecting them at appropriate times [8, chap. 8]. To implement this new practice, we have designed a tangible interface to visualise, in public spaces, the predicted availability of renewable energy. This tangible interface is CairnFORM, a physical histogram with shape change [7], interpretable at 360 degrees, constructed by stacking a new mechanism of illuminated extensible rings [6]. The opening of the rings according to exponential velocity profiles allows for increased perception at the periphery of the field of vision and at the periphery of attention [9 ; 11]. An 8-week experiment showed the superiority of the hedonic and pragmatic qualities of this physical display compared to a graphic display, to implement the new energy practice [8, chap. 8; 12].
